On January 5, 2014 Adalyn Pearl turned 6 months old!
Time has flown, and every single month I have told myself I would do a blog post on her development and her skills, and every month, I have missed the opportunity!
But, 6 months is big! She's been here for half a year, and that's just crazy!
I really feel like it was yesterday when we found out we were expecting again! In fact, it was just about a year ago when I had my first doctor's appointment, and we were told we were having our third daughter! To say that the past 6 months have gone by fast, would be a complete understatement. They've been a whirlwind, and I already feel like I've missed seeing her grow.
I know that sounds weird, but I feel that every time I look at her, I should see my tiny 7 lb 2 oz newborn baby. Instead, i'm seeing a little baby who is changing and developing every day, and maybe, just maybe, for the last 6 months, I've been in denial as to all the changes.
Adalyn had her 6 month well-baby check up on January 3rd. She was given all of her vaccines, and weighed in at 15 lbs 1 oz, and 26 inches long.
We decided right before Christmas Eve, to move Adalyn to her own room for night time sleeping. We were at the point, where she and I were getting up every 2-3 hours at night, and I had reached the point of constant exhaustion. By 4 and 5 months, Gretchen and Megan (respectively) were in their own rooms and sleeping through the night, so at 5 1/2 months, it was time for Adalyn to join the club.
I am not suggesting that CIO works for every family, but it has worked for our family, and it's something that I'm thankful that we utilize when the timing is right for us. I put Adalyn in her crib the first night after feeding her, putting her pajamas on, and finally rocking her for a bit. She went down about 7:30. She was up again at 9:30, but we let her CIO, which did take 20-30 minutes, but she did go back to sleep. At 10:30, I went in to her room and did a "dream feed" and she went right back to sleep. She woke up twice that night. The first time she fell back to sleep fairly soon, and the second time (around 5:30 am) I woke up to feed her again. Since then, she has done great! She usually wakes up around 5:30 to eat or because she's gotten herself stuck somehow in her crib, but we are both sleeping so much better!
Her wake times during the day are longer as well. Poor girl pretty much refuses to take anything more than a cat nap at daycare, but at home, she sleeps great during the day! Wake times are 60-75 minutes, and then her naps are typically about an hour and a half.
Over Christmas break, she was sleeping in until around 8:30, but since starting back to school this week, she's had to get up around 7. Her bedtime is between 7 and 8, depending on how long her evening cat nap is.
We still have not started baby food. She is still breastfeeding, and is very content with just mommy's milk. I plan on skipping cereal all together, and starting with baby food at the end of this month.
She loves playing in her exersaucer. She smiles and laughs. She plays on the floor, and loves the turtle her Aunt Vanessa and Uncle Charlie gave her for Christmas, mostly because of all the lights! She also still loves her Sofie giraffe.
She is teething, but she has no teeth. While we were at the doctor, I could see two tiny white buds of her bottom central teeth that I'm sure will come through in the next few weeks.
She isn't really sitting up. She tries when I put her upright, but only last a few seconds. I think she'll be able to sit up at the end of this month.
She sucks her thumb.
She is not a daddy's girl- yet. She would prefer that I hold her and soothe her.
She loves her big sisters.
She watches intently when I vacuum.
I feel blessed every time I look at her. DJ and I did not know that we needed or even wanted a third child, until God blessed us with her. I'm so thankful that God knows more than we do! I really cannot imagine our family without Adalyn!
