As you read this, a patient may be critically ill and his life may depend on whether a unit of blood of the right type is available. Just one pack of your blood can save the life of another person!
If you are healthy, you can donate a unit (about a pint) of blood without harm because a unit is a small part of your total blood volume. Your body will replace the lost fluid within a day, and your bone marrow will replace all of the blood cells within a couple of weeks.
Interesting facts: Do you know???
- The different blood cells have different life spans — red blood cells last about 120 days in the bloodstream; platelets about 10 days; and the various kinds of white blood cells can last from days to years. Why not donate before it "expires"?
- You can burn about 650 calories by donating one pint of blood. (Killing two birds with one stone eh?)
"Blood cannot be manufactured. It can only come as a gift from people."
